Comparing REML models for best fit

say you have two models fitted using REML. each has the same mean structure, but differs, say, in variance structure, random effects, or whatever equal models born out the fury of REML could possibly differ in.

now, say you want to assess which of your two models models your data better.

what options are there to directly compare fits, in a land where AIC is meaningless?
